Beware Proprietary Schools

Graduates and soon to be graduates should all be wary of
what we cal proprietary schools. These are privately owned
operations that advertise extensively on TV for a variety of
career such as criminal justice, dental/medical assistant, and
a host of others. They literally bomb the airwaves especially
during the day with promises of a career, job, training. DO
NOT FALL FOR THIS SCAM! These schools are not accredited
by WASC (Western Association of Schools and Colleges) have
non credentialed teachers, AND will charge you a LOT of money.
I had a young lady who graduated from HHS and went to one of
these schools for Art and is now $40,000 in debt! All she has
is an AA (Associate of Arts) degree which she could gotten at
LACC for almost nothing. Any area of career training that you
might desire is available at very low cost to graduate adults
through the LAUSD's Division of Adult, $Career Education, or the local
community college district. If you ever have any question about
any college or career training program, call Ms. Campbell or
myself first, and above all, never give out a credit card number
or sign anything!

iSEE Architecture/Engineering Internship

Open to juniors and seniors, this internship is available
to those interested in architecture, engineering, and the
construction industry. Saturday workshops begin in Jan
2009. There are also classes for college credit offered as
well as a PAID internship next summer. Last year HHS
had two individuals who participated who both raved
about the program and had a lot of fun participating.
See me in room 404 for an application and more info.

Senior Lunch Pass

As of today, only 3 seniors have received the coveted
Senior Lunch Pass. This is absolutely amazing considering
how many seniors were eligible in past years. The reason?
The CST! Last year's scores are being used to determine
eligibility NOW. So, word to you juniors: you must do well
on the CST this year so you can be in the mix next year if
you want to eat lunch off campus. We are looking at the
CST scores for English and Math. Any grade of BB (below
basic) or FBB (far below basic) will make you ineligible.
There have been straight A students who for one reason
or another scored poorly who have been rejected for the
lunch pass. The tendency for some students to "blow off"
the test because it "doesn't count" can surely lead to
disaster. Don't be fooled. Do your best on the test and
enjoy the privilege of lunch off campus.

Senior and Junior Lunch Passes

Senior and Junior lunch pass applications are available in room 404.
You must pay your senior dues of $140 and get a parent signature
on the application. You also cannot have 10 or more absences from
last school year, failure on the CAHSEE, either in English and Math,
and poor scores on the CST, (BB-below basic or FBB-far below basic)
AND at least a 2.0 GPA from last year, both semesters.

With that in mind, just a word to you Juniors: Now is the time to get
your act together if you want a lunch pass next year. A LOT, and I mean
A LOT of Seniors have been denied lunch passes in payment of sins
committed LAST YEAR. Don't be left out, get your game together NOW!
El Capitan Theater Hiring!

That's right and they'll be here at HHS on Wed. November 5 at lunch in the quad.
There are about 15 positions available. Personel from Disney will be here to hand
out applications so get ready! Oh yeah, you must be eligible for a work permit, that
is, you cannot have 3 D's or F's in any combination.

Friday, October 17, 2008

Universal Studios will be here on campus during lunch Oct. 29
in the quad to hire for the upcoming holiday season. You must
be at least 16 years old and be eligible for a work permit. That is
you cannot have 3 D's or F's on the last report card or have excessive
absences and/or tardies.

The ASVAB (Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery test will
be given in the ROTC classroom Oct. 28 at 8 AM. See Mr. Snyder
for more details. This is an excellent career inventory device that
shows your strengths and weaknesses both academic and vocational.

Saturday classes at Abram Friedman Occupational Center are still
available in a variety of subjects. See Mr. Snyder to get a registration
slip. Every 24 hrs in class is 2.5 elective credits.

Please feel free to stop by the College/Career center anytime to see
myself or Ms. Campbell. Just make sure you have a signed pass from
your teacher.

And finally, congratulations to all those selected as pollworkers for the
election Nov. 4. There was an overwhelming response to this program
and those chosen will witness a page in history first hand. I encourage
all of you 18+ to get registered and VOTE! I have voter registration
cards in my office room 404.

What's up for May

In case you hadn't noticed, Universal Studios is hiring
like crazy for you C trackers with the extended break.
Many work permits have been written and it is definitely
happening! Just apply online at http://www.ushjobs.com

Congratulations to senior Lola Bell who was hired at the
Social Security Administration for this summer clocking
a huge $12.50/hr. and a promise for rehiring the next
4 summers while in college. Lola plans on attending
El Camino for two years. then transferring to USC
majoring in criminal justice.

CST exams are coming up next week. Remember that poor
performance will result in no work permit. Don't put
yourself in jeopardy of being unemployed by not taking
these exams seriously.

I am currently off track, but will be in the office Wed thru
Friday. Any work permit issues can be addressed by Ms.
Olivia Smith in the C Track Center.

questions and to help with the application process in the
computer room.

CST coming at ya!

Good Luck on the CST exams given next week. Remember
that your participation and score will determine if you get
a work permit or not. Many many students who blew off
the test last year were denied work permits and suffered
because they did not put forth their best effort. So yes,
the CST does count! We are looking for everyone to
score at least Basic in all areas. Don't jeopardize your
chances at working and making money by not taking
this test seriously.

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year! Although nationwide it was a slow Christmas for retailers,
things looked good here at HHS with many students finding jobs for the
holiday season. However, some were bitterly disappointed when they did
not qualify for a work permit because of low test scores and/or poor grades.
So, let's keep those grades up, pass the CAHSEE, and take the CST seriously.
Low scores WILL penalize you as far a obtaining a work permit.

I have the following opportunities:

carpenter apprentice- seniors only

Constitutional Rights Foundation- B Track 10th/11th only
paid internship during intercession

P0llworkers for upcoming elections Feb 5, June 3, Nov 4 paid
$105 each

volunteer at LA Food Bank- unpaid but looks good on college app
